Why trade indices
- One position gives exposure to a basket of the largest companies in a market, instead of picking single shares.
- Indices react to interest-rate decisions, earnings seasons and economic data, so they move on news you can follow.
- As CFDs, you can go short as easily as long, which lets you hedge a share portfolio or trade a falling market.
- Trading hours follow each index's underlying market, with US indices trading almost around the clock on weekdays.
Costs to know
Index CFDs are priced through the spread. Positions held overnight pay or earn a swap based on the index's funding rate, and cash indices can be adjusted for dividends paid by their member companies. All of this is shown in the platform before you place a trade.
Frequently asked questions
What is US30?
US30 is the common name for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index of 30 large US companies. On our platform it is listed as DJIUSD.
What leverage applies to index CFDs?
Up to 1:50 on most major indices, and lower on some, such as the US 2000 at 1:20.
Can I short an index?
Yes. CFDs let you sell an index to open a position that gains if the index falls, and loses if it rises.
Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. This page is general information, not investment advice.
